Parish News for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

The Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

23 August 2026

Faith Comes from Hearing

A man who was deaf and therefore also had an impediment in his speech was brought to Jesus (Mark 7:31–37). In the same way, all are by nature deaf toward God and therefore also unable to confess the faith rightly. For “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Rom. 10:9–17). Jesus put His fingers into the man’s ears, and He spat and touched His tongue. Even so in Holy Baptism, water sanctified by the words of Jesus’ mouth is applied to us; and the finger of God, that is, the life–giving Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 3:4–11) is put into our ears in the hearing of the baptismal Gospel. Jesus’ sighing “Ephphatha” opened the man’s ears, and his tongue was loosed to speak plainly as Isaiah prophesied of the Messiah, “In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book” (Is. 29:18–24) So also, He who sighed and breathed His last on the cross for us has given us to hear and believe in Him and has opened our lips that our mouths may declare His praise.

College Bible Study and Meal As school starts again, we are happy to invite our college students to fellowship, a meal, and Bible Study on Tuesday evenings beginning August 25 at 5:30 pm. All college students are welcome! Members, please check the bulletin board to sign up to bring a meal.

Bonfire and Hymn Sing  Vicar Landrey would like to invite all college students to a bonfire in the Vicarage yard on Friday, September 11 at 6:30 pm. A meal of brats and hot dogs will be provided, with S’mores to follow! Anyone who would like to bring additional treats is welcome to do so.

Story of Scripture – New Testament Wednesdays @ 6:00 pm. Strengthen your biblical literacy and grow in your understanding of God’s Word. Each week, participants will read 6-10 chapters at home. Class time will then be devoted to reviewing what was read, answering questions, and connecting the theology of Scripture to our lives today. Together we will move quickly, yet thoughtfully, through the major stories of the Bible, gaining both a big-picture grasp and a deeper appreciation of God’s Word for our life. For August 26th, please read Matthew chapters 8-14 in advance.

Marriage-minded Lutheran young adults ages 21–40 are invited to a Lutheran Singles Weekend at Advent Lutheran Church in Zionsville, IN, October 9–11. The weekend will include worship, fellowship, meals, games, and opportunities to connect with other LCMS Lutheran young adults. Out-of-town attendees are welcome. Visit the registration link for the full schedule and details or contact Rev. Aaron Schultz at aschultz@adventlutheran.org with questions.
