Faith Trusts in Christ for Life Eternal
When the beggar Lazarus died, he was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. For he was truly Abraham’s seed. Like Abraham, he believed in the Lord, and the Lord “counted it to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15.6). The name Lazarus means “God is my help.” The unnamed rich man, on the other hand, did not love and trust in God. For he evidently cared little for the beggar at his gate. And “he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John 4.20). He who loved and trusted in possessions and prestige died and was in torments in Hades (St. Luke 16.19–31). Repentance and faith are worked only through Moses and the prophets—that is, the Word of God, for it points us to Christ. Only through His death and resurrection are we brought the comfort of life everlasting.
Nativity of St. John the Baptizer—June 24
The lessons are Isaiah 40.1-5 and St. Luke 1.57-80. Collect of the Day: O Lord God, heavenly Father, who through Thy servant John the Baptizer didst bear witness that Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world, and that all who believe in Him shall inherit eternal life, we humbly pray Thee to enlighten us by Thy Holy Spirit that we may at all times find comfort and joy in this witness, continue steadfast in the true faith, and at last with all believers attain unto eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son…
St. Peter and St. Paul, Apostles—June 29
The lessons are Acts 12.1-11 and St. Matthew 16.13-20. Collect of the Day: O God, who didst give Thine Apostles Peter and Paul grace to lay down their lives for the sake of Thy dear Son, endow us, we beseech Thee, with like constancy that we may at all times be ready to lay down our lives for Him who laid down His life for us; through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son…
